Towards More Informative Answers in Terminological Logics

چکیده
In this paper, the query-answering problem (also called retrieval problem, in terminological logics) is studied and a new framework is proposed. The declarative semantics extends the classical definition of answer in order to refer to some elements that exist in all models although they may not possess a name. With an appropriate representation of these elements, answers are regular languages and are described by regular expressions. We claim that these regular expressions give a better understanding of the knowledge base that is being queried. The operational semantics relies on a finite automaton which is built, independently of the query, from some completions of the knowledge base. Once this automaton has been generated, answers can be efficiently computed. Although sound, the operational semantics is not complete in the general case, but we state sufficient conditions on the knowledge base under which the two semantics are equivalent.

Description Logics are not just for the Flightless-Birds: A New Look at the Utility and Foundations of Description Logics
This paper presents some of the underlying principles of description logics (also known as terminological logics or kl-one-style languages), grounding them in the lattice of terms organized by the so-called \subsumption" relationship. A survey of the increasingly varied uses of description logics, including industrial applications, is presented by considering their role in a number of di erent ...
متن کاملDocument Retrieval by Relevance Terminological Logics
Information Retrieval (IR) is presented as the task of retrieving the documents that are relevant to a given query. In the context of a Terminological Logic (TL) based approach to IR, this amounts to embodying a notion of relevance in the logical implication relation of the chosen TL. Among the many possible readings of the term “relevance”, the one captured by relevance logic, and in particula...
متن کامل(Re) Making the Procrustean Bed? Standardization and Customization as Competing Logics in Healthcare
Recent years have witnessed a parallel and seemingly contradictory trend towards both the standardization and the customization of healthcare and medical treatment. Here, we explore what is meant by ‘standardization’ and ‘customization’ in healthcare settings and explore the implications of these changes for healthcare delivery. We frame the paradox of these divergent and opposing factors in te...
متن کاملAn Alternative Proof Method for Possibilistic Logic and its Application to Terminological Logics
Possibilistic logic, an extension of first-order logic, deals with uncertainty that can be es timated in terms of possibility and necessity measures. Syntactically, this means that a first-order formula is equipped with a possi bility degree or a necessity degree that ex presses to what extent the formula is pos sibly or necessarily true. Possibilistic reso lution yields a calculus for pos...
متن کاملA Terminological Default Logic
Terminological Logics are knowledge representation formalisms of considerable applicative interest, as they are speci cally oriented to the vast class of application domains that are describable by means of taxonomic organizations of complex objects. Although the eld of terminological logics has lately been an active area of investigation, few researchers (if any) have addressed the problem of ...
